Our take on the Tascam DR-40X

The Tascam DR-40X is a portable recorder with built-in mics, for streamers who record voiceovers or ambient sound alongside a stream. It holds up to 128 GB of storage.

An overwrite function lets you punch in over a bad take, and there is an undo level for the edit. The listing names a PC as a compatible device. It is a handheld recorder rather than a stream mic, so plan on recording separately and syncing later. Retailers rate it 4.6 across 1,222 ratings.

Pros
  • Overwrite function with an undo level
  • Up to 128 GB of storage
  • Built-in mic form factor
Cons
  • Recorder first, not a plug-in stream mic
  • Listing names PC as the only compatible device
