How long does a power bank actually last while IRL streaming?
By Elan Harpaz · Published 2026-10-17
Capacity on the box is not runtime in the field. What a 20,000 mAh bank really gives you once conversion losses and a full rig are accounted for.
Your encoder tops out at 1080p60. A higher-end encoder would go further.

A 20,000 mAh bank does not give you 20,000 mAh of useful power. Cells are rated at 3.7 volts and your gear wants 5 volts or more, so after conversion you keep roughly 60 watt hours of the 74 on the label. Every runtime figure below starts from that corrected number, which is why they are shorter than the marketing suggests.
What each part of the rig draws
- Encoder board: the biggest constant draw in a DIY bag, and it runs the whole time.
- Modem: high while transmitting, and it climbs as signal gets worse. A weak-signal day costs battery as well as bitrate.
- Camera: small in comparison, but a camera that will not charge while outputting video becomes the limit no matter how big the bank is.
- Phone as a second screen: easy to forget, and it drains from the same bank.
Buying for a real session
Work out the hours you actually stream, then buy for that plus a margin, because cold weather and weak signal both cut it. Two medium banks beat one large one: you can hot-swap without ending the stream, and airline rules cap what you can carry.

High wattage output with a display that shows real draw, which is the fastest way to learn what your rig actually costs per hour.

When something in the bag wants 12 volts rather than USB, this is the simple answer.

The step up to broadcast batteries, worth it once you are running a camera and encoder off one supply all day.
Frequently asked
Why does my 20,000 mAh bank not last as long as the maths suggests?
Because mAh is quoted at the cell voltage of 3.7 V and your gear runs at 5 V or higher. After conversion losses a 20,000 mAh bank delivers roughly 60 Wh of usable energy rather than the 74 Wh on the label.
Can I hot-swap a battery without ending the stream?
Yes, if your gear is on separate supplies or you use a bank that passes power through while charging. This is the main practical argument for two medium banks over one large one.
